A craftsman’s approach to historic timber on façades — Part 3 of 4
Once the wood is prepared — stripped, repaired, sound — the next decision is the one most people think they’ve already made before the job even starts.
What do you put on it?
The answer is more interesting than it first appears. Because paint, stain, linseed oil paint, and oil don’t just look different. They behave differently, age differently, fail differently, and make different demands on the craftsman who applies them and the client who lives with them.
What does a good exterior finish actually do?
Before choosing a product, it helps to be clear about what you’re asking it to do.
A good exterior finish for historic timber needs to: keep moisture out while allowing the wood to breathe, flex with the seasonal movement of the timber without cracking or peeling, protect against UV degradation, and maintain its appearance long enough to justify the effort of application.
That last point matters more than people realise. A finish that looks perfect for two years and then fails completely is not a good finish. A finish that looks slightly less dramatic on day one but holds for eight to ten years with occasional maintenance is a professional result.
The case for stain
I’ll be honest about my own preference: for timber where the grain and character of the wood are worth showing, I have always favoured stain.
There is something about a well-stained timber surface that no paint can replicate. Yousee the wood. You see that it’s a living material with its own history and texture. And when the time comes to renew the finish — which it will — the process is straightforward. Clean the surface, lightly prepare it, apply a fresh coat. The wood responds. It comes back to life in a way that feels almost immediate.
That renewal effect is one of the underappreciated pleasures of working with stain. A paint system, when it starts to fail, often needs to be stripped back before you can start again. Stain, maintained at the right interval, rarely reaches that point.
Stain is also more forgiving of the natural movement of timber. It doesn’t form a film that can crack and peel. It penetrates the surface and moves with it.
The case for paint
That said, there are situations where paint is clearly the right answer — and where stain simply doesn’t deliver what’s needed.
A front door is the obvious example. A door is a statement. It’s the first thing a visitor touches. On a historic townhouse, a well-painted door in a considered colour, with the right sheen, can lift an entire façade.
Paint also gives you options that stain doesn’t — full coverage of colour, a harder surface finish, the ability to work with a historic palette in a way that is historically appropriate.
The key is using the right paint. Exterior joinery deserves a product that has been properly formulated and tested for that application. Not the cheapest tin on the shelf. Not an interior product used outside because it was left over. A quality exterior alkyd or water-based system, applied to a properly prepared surface, in the right conditions.
Linseed oil paint — the old way making a comeback
Something worth addressing separately, because it’s been gaining ground steadily and deserves an honest look.
Linseed oil-based paints — traditional formulations built around boiled or raw linseed oil as the binder — have been used on timber for centuries. They fell largely out of favour during the 20th century as synthetic alkyd and acrylic systems took over. They are now coming back, partly driven by the heritage restoration sector, partly by a broader interest in natural materials and traditional methods.
The arguments in favour are real. Linseed oil paint penetrates the wood rather than forming a surface film — which means it feeds the timber rather than sitting on top of it, and when it fails, it tends to do so gradually rather than in sheets. It is vapourpermeable, which matters enormously on historic timber that may have variable moisture content. And its composition is historically appropriate for buildings from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries — it is, in a very real sense, what was originally used.
The arguments for caution are also real. Linseed oil paint dries slowly — sometimes very slowly, particularly in cool or damp conditions. Application requires care and patience. The colour range, while growing, is still more limited than modern systems. And the long-term performance data on modern reformulations, compared with the decades of testing that established alkyd systems have behind them, is still being accumulated.
I have not worked extensively with linseed oil paint myself, and I think honesty matters more than false authority here. What I can say is that the principle is sound — a breathable, penetrating, historically appropriate finish for historic timber is exactly what the material calls for. Whether the modern products live up to that principle over time is a question the Guild is well placed to answer collectively.

Traditional vs modern — does high-tech mean better for historic timber?
This is a question the paint industry would rather you didn’t ask too loudly.
Walk into any professional paint supplier today and you’ll find systems that promise extraordinary performance — waterborne formulations with flexible resins, 2component finishes with near-industrial durability, hybrid systems that claim to combine the breathability of traditional products with the hardness of modern coatings. The technical datasheets are impressive. The marketing language is confident.
And some of these products genuinely perform well. A quality 2K exterior system, properly applied to well-prepared timber, will resist moisture, UV, and mechanical damage for years. There is real science behind the best of them.
But there is a question worth sitting with: is a finish designed for maximum hardness and surface resistance always the right choice for timber that is more than a hundred years old?
Historic joinery moves. It has been moving, slowly, for over a century. The joints havesettled. The wood has its own rhythm of expansion and contraction, shaped by its age, its species, its history of previous treatments. A very hard, very rigid modern coating can perform brilliantly on new, stable, dimensionally consistent timber — and struggle on old timber that refuses to stop behaving like a living material.
This is the same argument, in a different form, that applies to the mortar debate in masonry restoration. A mortar harder than the stone it binds will damage the stone over time. A paint system less flexible than the timber it covers will crack at the joints — and once the film cracks, moisture has its entry point.
Traditional finishes — linseed oil paint, quality oil-based alkyds, penetrating stains — were formulated in an era when timber movement was simply assumed. They were designed to work with the wood, not to hold it in place. That is not nostalgia. That is material logic.
The best modern systems acknowledge this and formulate accordingly. The worst are simply engineered for showroom performance and spec sheet numbers.
As with most things in restoration: the most expensive or the most technically advanced option is not automatically the most appropriate one. The right product is the one that understands what it’s being asked to do — and what the material underneath it actually needs.
Gloss, satin, or matt?
This question comes up on almost every project, and the answer is rarely as simple as client preference.
Gloss has a long history on exterior joinery — particularly on doors and window frames. It’s durable, easy to clean, and holds its colour well. The criticism is that it can look plastic, particularly on modern paint systems that lack the depth of traditional oil-based gloss. On a historic building, a high-gloss finish can feel at odds with the character of the architecture.
Satin is where I tend to land for most exterior joinery. It has enough sheen to be practical — dirt doesn’t cling to it the way it does to matt — but it sits more quietly on the building. It doesn’t shout. On a historic façade, that’s usually the right choice.
Matt is tempting aesthetically — there’s a softness to it that can look very refined. But for exterior use, particularly on surfaces that get handled (doors, window sills), matt finishes are high-maintenance. They mark easily, absorb dirt, and are harder to clean without damaging the finish. For a front door, I’d steer most clients away from it despitethe current trend.
The client’s preference matters — but so does an honest conversation about what each option actually means in practice. Part of the craftsman’s job is to give that advice, not just to follow the brief without question.
A question to the Guild
